Porcelain onlays and porcelain inlays are used when teeth are damaged too much for a filling and too little for a crown. At our Port Coquitlam dental practice, porcelain inlays and onlays are restorative methods used to maintain the integrity of a tooth while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.
The difference between porcelain inlays and porcelain onlays is that they cover different parts of the tooth. A porcelain inlay fills in the space between the rounded edges (cusps) at the centre of the tooth, while a porcelain onlay covers one or more cusps or the entire surface of a tooth.
To prepare your teeth for porcelain inlays and onlays, a couple of steps need to be completed by your Port Coquitlam dentist. First, we will remove any dental decay to make room for the restoration. An impression of the tooth will then be made and the porcelain inlays or porcelain onlays will be prepared in a laboratory. While your restoration is being crafted, a temporary filling will be placed.
Upon your return to our dental practice, the porcelain inlay or porcelain onlay will be carefully cemented to your tooth to replace the temporary filling. At Oxford Family Dental, we ensure your comfort throughout the entire porcelain inlays and onlays procedure.
