Post-Operative Instructions
for Dental Extraction
  • Follow your regular diet on the day of surgery

    • Avoid caffeine or stimulants

    • Avoid smoking

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

    • You may bring music to listen to during your visit

  • Do not wear makeup on the day of surgery

  • Brush and floss your teeth before coming in

  • Plan for rest:

    • No physical activity on the day of surgery

    • Limit physical exertion for 5–7 days post-surgery

  • Prepare ice packs to manage swelling

    • Keep your head elevated with pillows to reduce swelling

  • Avoid alcohol:

    • No alcohol 24 hours before surgery and until antibiotics are finished

  • Eat soft foods and drink cool liquids the day of surgery

    • Do not come on an empty stomach

  • Limit Aspirin (ASA) before surgery unless prescribed for medical reasons

  • Notify the office if you are taking:

    • Bisphosphonates

    • Anticoagulants (blood thinners)

    • Have any medication allergies

  • After surgery:

    • Avoid hard, crunchy foods for 7 days

    • Stick to a soft diet for 3–4 days:

      • Smoothies

      • Soups

      • Porridge

      • Yogurt

      • Meal replacement shakes (e.g., Ensure, Boost)

  • If receiving oral or IV sedation, you must arrange for someone to drive you home

Medications to Take

  • Antibiotics (Amoxicillin or Clindamycin):

    • Start the morning before surgery

  • Orocleanse/Peridex mouth rinse:

    • Start the day before, 30ml swish twice a day

  • Dexamethasone (4mg):

    • Take 1 hour before surgery

  • Advil/Ibuprofen (400mg):

    • If prescribed, take 2 hours before your appointment
