Post-Operative Instructions
for Bone Grafting
  • Bone grafting is a delicate procedure that adds height or width to your jawbone, creating a strong foundation for future dental implants. Because the gums must stretch to cover the new bone, healing takes time and requires special care to avoid complications. The area is especially sensitive to pressure, so it’s important to minimize any disruption around the surgical site.
  • If you wear dentures, do not use them until your stitches are removed at your follow-up appointment. Even after that visit, try to wear them only when necessary, such as when going out in public. Wearing them for extended periods too soon can interfere with healing and compromise the bone graft. Also, avoid pulling your lips or cheeks to look at the healing site—this may loosen the stitches and delay recovery.
  • In most cases, the grafted site will be ready for implant placement within 6 months. Our team will reach out to help schedule the next step in your treatment. However, if you cancel or miss your appointment, it’s your responsibility to reschedule within this time window. Delaying beyond 6 months may result in bone resorption, which could require repeating the graft. For best results, follow these instructions carefully and contact us if you have any concerns.
